KAILUA-KONA — A Kailua-Kona man remains in critical condition after crashing his mo-ped on Saturday in the Old Kona Industrial Area.

The 66-year-old victim has not been positively identified, the Hawaii Police Department said in a press release issued Monday morning.

Responding to a 2:41 p.m. Saturday report, police determined that a white 2019 Honda Ruckus mo-ped heading west had pulled out of a parking lot onto Kaiwi Street and lost control. The 66-year-old man operating the mo-ped was ejected from the vehicle onto the roadway, according to police.

The man suffered severe head injuries and was transported to the Kona Community Hospital for treatment. He was later transported to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu where he is listed in critical condition, police said.

Police believe that speed and alcohol were factors in the crash. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the crash. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact Officer Jason Foxworthy at 326-4646, ext. 229. Those who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.
