Ho plays at KHS’ new lecture series
CAPTAIN COOK — An award-winning musician, producer and Hawaiian storyteller will kick off a new lecture series aimed at broadening and sharing cultural and musical experiences.
The 2020 Hanohano O Kona: Wahi Pana Lecture Series begins with Daniel Ho, a Grammy award-winning Hawaiian music virtuoso, who made waves with his Hawaiian version of “Nothing Compares to You,” featured in the 2008 film Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
This lecture, Hawaiian Music and American Voices: A Performance and Discussion with Daniel Ho, will take place at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 7 in the pasture below Kona Historical Society’s headquarters in Kealakekua.
“We are so excited to welcome Daniel Ho to our pasture in partnership with the Smithsonian Institute to kick off our Hanohano O Kona Lecture Series for 2020,” said Dance Aoki, Kona Historical Society executive director. “Daniel is an incredible ambassador of Hawaiian music, and we look forward to hearing some of what he has learned of Hawaiian music’s place in the field of American music as a producer and performer.”
Gupton, Parker, team up for art show Saturday
Local Kona artists Alex Gupton and Brad “Tiki Shark” Parker are teaming up for their first shared art show at the award winning Kona Oceanfront Gallery from 5-9 p.m. Saturday.
Gupton and Parker are the repeated winners of Hawaii’s Best of The West Show held at the gallery, which itself has been voted the “Best in Hawaii” two years running. Now these two crowd favorites take over their home venue to celebrate their unique art styles, friendship and flare.
Both artists will be present to sign artwork purchased the night of the show.
Holiday treats and refreshments will be offered. Part of the evening’s proceeds will be donated to the Hawaii Artist Collaboration.
Gupton is known for his detailed pen and ink images on acrylic paintings, dubbed a “the Art of Detail.” Parker is a multi-award winning celebrity artist who works in the pop-surrealistic style of the low-brow art with a twist of Hawaiian pop-culture.
Kona Aloha Singers recruiting vocalists
KAILUA-KONA — The Kona Aloha Singers (KAS), a nonprofit, contemporary pop rock music chorus in Kailua-Kona, is recruiting singers for their spring 2020 season. KAS will sing some of the biggest hits from the 1960s through today in the pop rock music genres.
Open house rehearsal begins Jan. 7 at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, 77-165 Lako Street. Doors open 5 p.m. for registration with rehearsal at 6 p.m. The cost to join is $90 for adults and $35 for high school students, with an additional cost of $45 for sheet music. Rehearsals are 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays in the church sanctuary.
Artistic director is Katya Eaddy, a Russian native and graduate of the prestigious Moscow Music College with a bachelor’s degree in violin and a master’s degree in choir conducting. She worked as a choir conductor in private and public schools in Russia and moved to Alaska in 1994 where she became an American citizen. While living in Alaska, Eaddy conducted community college choirs and taught private voice and music lessons. A resident of Waimea, she moved to the Big Island in 2016 and teaches private music lessons in West and North Hawaii.

Kahilu Theatre presents classical orchestra ensemble, Camerata RCO
Camerata RCO, a unique ensemble comprised of members of Amsterdam’s renown Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, will perform 7 p.m. Jan. 14 at the Kahilu Theatre.
Formed by members of the famed Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (RCO), these prestigious colleagues founded Camerata RCO to perform chamber music in multiple formations from duets to small chamber orchestra. This independent group has a strong desire to explore smaller, more intimate pieces with a special focus on the classical and romantic repertoire for winds and strings.
It is an absolute love of chamber music that drives these artists to divert time out of their busy schedules, as members of one of the world’s greatest orchestras, to perform together as Camerata RCO. Praised by the New York Times for their “warm, glowing performance,” the ensemble has enjoyed tremendous success in the Netherlands and abroad, performing in music capitals such as Amsterdam, Vienna, Tokyo, Seoul, Madrid, Rome, New York, and now Hawaii.
On this tour Marc Daniel van Biemen will be on violin, Santa Vizine on viola, Louis Rodde on cello, Hein Wiedijk on clarinet, Katy Wooley on horn, and Thomas Beijer on piano.
Students age 8-18 are free to this performance when accompanied by a ticket holding adult. Tickets are $50/25 and can be purchased at kahilutheatre.org, 885-6868 or at the Kahilu Theatre Box Office, 67-1186 Lindsey Road in Waimea.
Music is Art at SKEA
Music is Art by SKEA will be held 2-4 p.m. Jan. 12, and the second Sunday of every month. Bring your instrument, your voice, and something you are working on. Printed copies of your piece would be appreciated. All styles of music are encouraged.
Each session will start with a short informal presentation followed by a period of individual performance and end with a jam session. There will be a PA system set up and percussion on site. The first session will be a discussion of goals and desires for future meetups. A donation of $5 will be greatly appreciated by SKEA.
