Ayako Uehana

Ayako Nishibe Uehana, 90, of Kapaau, died Dec. 17, 2019, at her residence. Born May 19, 1929, in Kealakekua, she was a retired social worker for the State of Hawaii, Department of Social Services and member of Kohala Hongwanji Mission.

Private services were held. Please no koden.

She is survived by her husband, Shojiro Uehana; sons, Ira Uehana, Asa Uehana, all of Kapaau; daughter, Fran (James) Nadatani of Eleele, Kauai; brother, Asao (Cynthia) Nishibe of Honolulu; sister, Judy (Harold) Fujisue of California; brother-in-law; one grandson.

Rebecca Mauhili

Rebecca Leimomi Mauhili, 80, of Hilo died Dec. 11, 2019, at the Castle Medical Center on Oahu. Born in Honolulu, she was a retired medical social worker at Hilo Medical Center, member of 3 Days and 3 Nights Study Hall in Hilo, Hilo Lions Club, Kamehameha Schools Hawaii Alumni Choir, Hawaiian Bowling Club and Hawaiian Civic Club of Laupahoehoe.

Friends may call 9-10 a.m. Jan. 2 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel; funeral service at 10. Burial to follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Casual attire.

She is survived by companion, Ernest Thomas of Hilo, daughters, Reinalee Kaili of Waimea, Charlotte (Kawika) Napeahi of Hilo, Lydia (Don) Hooser of Kailua-Kona, Becki (Lei Mauga) Kaili of Aiea, Kimie Mauhili of California; sons, Charles Kaili of Waikoloa, Noble (Dorthi) Kaili of Hilo, Leitan Kaili-Mauhili of Aiea, Clarence (Beverly) Mauhilo of California, David Mauhili of California, Daniel (Joann) Mauhili of California; hanai-daughter, Loreen (Michael) Bahilot Sosa of Kau; sister, Visitacion Mokihana Pavao of Kailua-Kona; two sisters-in-law; 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Leabert Matsuo

Leabert Yoshiki Matsuo, 76, of Hilo, died Dec. 22, 2019, in the Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Facility in Hilo. Born Oct. 3, 1943, in Hilo, he was retired from Sears Automotive Center and HPM as a mechanic, was also the proprietor of Matsuo Auto Repair, and a member of the Hilo Meishoin Buddhist Temple and was a United States Army Veteran.

Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Jan. 4 at the Hilo Meishoin Buddhist Temple, 97 Olona St. Memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Casual attire is requested. No flowers.

He is survived by wife, Patricia Matsuo of Hilo; son, Lealand (Devan Tomono) Matsuo of Hilo; brothers, Kenneth (Janet) Matsuo of Hilo and Harold (Karen) Matsuo of Hilo; brother-in-law; sister-in-law; grandson; an uncle and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Elise Nerida

Elise P. Nerida, 86, of Hilo, died Dec. 12, 2019, at Straub Hospital in Honolulu. Born on Sept. 16, 1933, in the Philippines, she retired from Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut.

Services will be held Jan. 3 at Seventh Day Adventist Church, 162 Kapiolani St. in Hilo. Visitation 9-10 a.m. Church service 10-11. Burial at Homalani Memorial Park, 388 Ponhawai St. in Hilo. Lunch to follow at Carvalho Park.

Elise is survived by son, Charles (Melissa) Nerida of Hilo; daughter, Sally (Gilbert) Pimentel of Honolulu; sister Rosario Lacuesta of California; sister-in-law; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews.

Veronica Tiogangco

Veronica “Ronnie Cordoban” Tiogangco, 68, of Honokaa, died Dec. 4, 2019, at Hilo Medical Center. She was born on Aug. 16, 1951, in Ka’u.

A celebration of life will be held at 10 a.m. Jan. 4 at Haina Park. Lunch to follow.

Yutaka Shimasaki

Yutaka Shimasaki, 91, of Keaau, died Dec. 12, 2019, at the Life Care Center of Hilo. He was born in Kapoho and was a retired heavy equipment operator with the former Puna Sugar Co. and a member of the Puna Hongwanji Mission.

Private services held. No flowers; no koden.

He is survived by wife, Kazuko Shimasaki of Keaau; sons, Calvin T. Shimasaki of Keaau and Russell Y. Shimasaki of Hilo; three grandchildren, four great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Margaret Gota

Margaret Mieko Gota, 89, of Hilo, died Nov. 6, 2019, at home. She was born in Hilo and was a retired teacher at Waiakea Intermediate School and a member of the Church of the Holy Cross.

She is survived by brother, Robert (Alice) Fujimoto of Hilo; numerous nieces and nephews.
