Fire officials are investigating the cause of a structure fire that broke out early Wednesday in Hamakua.

Responding to a 12:50 a.m. alarm, Hawaii Fire Department personnel arrived 10 minutes later at a residence on Hoolokahi Street in Paauhau to find a fire burning in a downstairs garage area of the house, the department said in a press release. At the time, residents were attempting to put out the flames with a garden hose.

Firefighters quickly took over the effort, making entry into the garage and extinguishing the fire, the department said. The fire was under control by 1:10 a.m. and extinguished by 1:30 a.m.

No injuries were reported. Damage to the structure was estimated at $66,500.
