Officers arrest 25 drivers for suspected DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Jan. 20 and Sunday. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash.

Kona officers arrested 10 of the drivers, according to data released Monday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Hilo arrested seven while Puna officers arrested six. Officers in Hamakua and South Kohala arrested one motorist in each district.

So far this year, there have been 87 DUI arrests compared with 73 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 74 major accidents so far this year compared with 60 during the same period last year.

Three fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Monday afternoon, police said. By this time in 2019, two people had perished.
