Ruth Kunitomo

Ruth Teiko (Ushiroda) Kunitomo, 88, of Honolulu, died Dec. 30, 2019, in Honolulu. Born in Kealakekua, she was a retired clerk typist for the state Department of Education at Kokohead Elementary.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Feb. 23 Hosoi Garden Mortuary on Oahu for a 10 a.m. service. Casual attire.

She is survived by sons, Eric (Kimberly) Kunitomo of Kealakekua and Casey Kunitomo of Kailua, Oahu; daughters, JoAnn (Ross) Kawamoto of Hilo and Lisa Kunitomo of Honolulu; five grandchildren.

Arsenia Macanas

Arsenia “Arsie” F. Macanas, 80, of Pepeekeo, died Jan. 19, 2020, at Hawaii Care Choices. She was a retired licensed practical nurse and a health aide for Kalanianaole Elementary and Intermediate School in Papaikou and a member of the Hawaii Government Employees Association and Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Papaikou.

Friends may from 8 to 9 a.m. Feb. 14 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Papaikou for a 10 a.m. Mass. Casual attire.

She is survived by husband, Juan Macanas of Pepeekeo; sons, Andrew (Andrea) Macanas and Galen (Michele) Macanas of Hilo, Cyrus (Dotty) Macanas of Papaikou; daughter, Juanette (Eddie) Cordeiro of Kalopa; eight grandchildren; sisters, Pilar DeMattos and Edith Esteban of Hilo; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Fernando Gomez Jr.

Fernando “Bobby” Escobar Gomez Jr., 85, of Hilo, died Jan. 21, 2020, in the Adult Foster Family Care Home in Hilo. Born Nov. 13, 1934, in Darapidap, Candon, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, he was a retired automobile mechanic for the former Hilo Motors and Keaau Agribusiness Co., Navy veteran and member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 142 and ILWU. Bowling League.

Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Feb. 12 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel in Hilo for 10:30 a.m. service. Urn burial to follow at East Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 at noon. Casual attire is requested.

He is survived by wife, Genoveva Gomez of Hilo; daughter, Debra (Garrett) Ota of Hilo; sons, Matthew (Lara) Gomez of Hilo and Thomas (Jeannine) Gomez of Hilo; brother, Robert Gomez of the Philippines; sisters, Lydia (Rudy) Quincena of West Covina, CA, Feliza Aganad of Chicago and Mary Lou (Manolo) Valdez of Colorado; caregiver, Maria Cariaga of Hilo; eight grandchildren; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Brent Kaneakua

Brent Kaneakua, 65, of Pahoa, died Dec. 22, 2019, at home. Born Aug. 25, 1954, in Honolulu, he was a drywall hanger and taper and a member of the Painter and Taper Union.

Friends may call at 3 p.m. Feb. 8 at Pahoa Community Recreation Center for a celebration of life.

He is survived by wife, Regina Kaneakua of Pahoa; sons, Walaka (Keala) Kaneakua and Kimo Kaneakua, both of Pahoa; Malia Kaneakua of Pahoa; six grandchildren; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Juliana Butts

Juliana “Anna” Butts, 74, of Hilo, died Jan. 19, 2020, at home. Born Feb. 16, 1945, in Kukaiau, she was a retired tutor for the Department of Education, a ukulele player and singer with the Kamana “Ukulele for Fun” group and a lauhala weaver and seamstress.

Private services were held. Family requests no monetary gifts or flowers. Condolences may be sent to 140 Mikimiki Place, Hilo, HI 96720.

She is survived by husband, Bruce Butts of Hilo; son, Danon DuBoise of Hilo; daughters, Danette DuBoise of Las Vegas, Daylynn (Bern) Brostek of North Kohala; brothers, Benjamin Feliciano and Martin (Diane) Feliciano of Paauilo, Pabling Feliciano of Honokaa, Dyniss Feliciano and Rhudel Feliciano of Roy, Utah; sisters, Margie Feliciano of Hilo, Gina DeRego of Honokaa, Buena (Conrad) Jiminiz of Puna, Marie (Rodney) Paulos of Waimea, Debbie (Gary) Mendes of Ahualoa, Sheila Feliciano of Kona, Kanani Feliciano of Hilo; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
