A winter weather advisory goes into effect at noon Thursday for the summits of Maunakea and Mauna Loa.
Deep moisture along a front will move over the Big Island Thursday and Thursday night, producing periods of snow showers and freezing rain possibly into Friday, according to Honolulu-based National Weather Service forecasters. Up to 5 inches of snow is forecast to fall at elevations above 10,500 feet.
A high wind warning is already in effect for both summits through Sunday morning. Wind speeds of 45-75 mph with gusts topping 90 mph are expected.
Forecasters cautioned that travel could be very difficult and blowing snow will reduce visibility.
