HONOLULU — A Honolulu man has pleaded guilty to murder in the 2016 stabbing of a four-year-old boy.
Waiser Walter pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder this week, the Honolulu prosecuting attorney’s office announced Thursday.
Walter, 29, stabbed the boy and the child’s aunt multiple times in their apartment in October 2016, prosecutors said. The boy died, and his aunt was hospitalized in critical condition.
In a deal with prosecutors, Walter is expected to be sentenced to life in prison with the possibility for parole. Prosecutors said they will recommend to the Hawaii Paroling Authority that he serve at least 35 years in prison before being eligible for parole.
“This was a completely unprovoked attack by a man the victims considered family,” Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Scott Bell said in a statement. “The defendant intended to raise an insanity defense but psychiatrists who examined him refuted this defense.”
Walter is scheduled to be sentenced on April 13.
His public defender didn’t immediately respond to a phone message seeking comment Thursday.
