Police nab 22 for suspected DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Feb. 17 and Sunday. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash.

Officers in Kona nabbed nine drivers while South Hilo officers arrested six and Puna officers four, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Kohala, North Kohala and Hamakua arrested one motorist in each district.

So far this year, there have been 169 DUI arrests compared with 175 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 155 major accidents so far this year compared with 142 during the same period last year.

Five fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Tuesday morning, police said. By this time in 2019, two people had perished.
