West Hawaii County Band performs this evening

The West Hawaii County Band presents “February Love Songs” this evening at the West Hawaii Civic Center in Kailua-Kona.

The music will be selected from the bands extensive repertoire of music including jazz standards, film scores, classic band music, traditional Hawaiian favorites and of course there’s always a march or two.

The group is a community and civic band comprised of approximately 20 musicians from all walks of life. The band is supported in part by the County of Hawaii Parks and Recreation Department. The band rehearses weekly and performs regular monthly concerts in Kailua-Kona. In addition, the band, led by Artistic Director Bernaldo Evangelista, can be heard at parades and civic events in the community throughout the year.

Kailua-Kona library celebrates 7th Leap Year Birthday

The Kailua-Kona Public Library is celebrating its 7th Leap Year Birthday Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with magical performances and activities featuring Arneleo the Great, face painting, balloon animal construction, magic-themed craft, and birthday cake.

The “Books and Magic“ celebration is free to the public.

Whiskey Classic coming up

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in collaboration with Parker Ranch presents its inaugural Whiskey Classic on March 7.

The evening event will feature live entertainment, including country music, raffle, and lawn games, Southern comfort-style cuisine, and Whiskey. Attendees can also learn how to make their favorite cocktail with an expert mixologist to be paired with a savory dish prepared by Mauna Kea’s culinary team.

The Whiskey Classic is slated 6-9 p.m at the Mauna Kea North Garden. Tickets are $125 with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Mauna Kea Resort Culinary and Hospitality Scholarship administered by the University of Hawaii Foundation.

Annual Waikoloa Ukulele Festival March 7

Waikoloa Beach Resort invites all ukulele lovers to B.Y.O.U. (Bring Your Own Ukulele) and join in the celebration of Hawaii’s favorite musical instrument at the Annual Great Waikoloa Ukulele Festival March 7.

The free event, now in its 20th year, begins at 10 a.m. with a free ukulele workshop with Roy and Kathy Sakuma. It continues all day with live entertainment on three stages at Kings’ Shops and Queens’ MarketPlace, along with displays, demonstrations, and ‘ukulele giveaways by sponsoring companies.

Toby Walker to perform four shows, workshop

Toby Walker, one of the most extraordinary finger-style guitarists performing before the public today, will perform next week on the Big Island.

Internationally and nationally acclaimed, Walker has been hailed as an award-winning, roots music finger-style guitar virtuoso and songwriter who has toured the U.S. and Europe. Blending the styles of blues, ragtime, country, bluegrass, old-time jazz and rock, Walker has his own style and as such received numerous awards, including being the first place recipient of the International Blues Challenge Award in Memphis and the NY Music Award for best instrumental CD. Walker has also been inducted into the NY Blues Hall Of Fame.

Walker‘s first performance is 7 p.m. Wednesday at Gertrude’s Jazz Bar in Kailua-Kona. Doors open at 6:30. Tickets to the Blues Bear Hawaii Production $25.

On Thursday, he performs at 7 p.m. at Blue Dragon Tavern in Kawaihae. Doors open at 6:30. Tickets are $18.

On March 7, Walker will lead 90-minute guitar workshop at 1 p.m. at Hilo Ukulele and Guitar. Cost is $45. Reservations must be made in advance at www.bluesbearhawaii.com

Later that day, Walker performs at 7 p.m at Mokuapapa Discovery Center in Hilo. On March 8, he takes the stage at 7 p.m at Kilauea Military Camp within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
