State champion student-athletes at Kohala High School can soon look forward to a new gymnasium and athletic facilities on the Kohala High School campus.

Recently, Gov. David Ige released $1 million in state capital improvement project (CIP) funds to finance the design of a new gymnasium and athletic facilities at Kohala High School. Following the design process, funds for construction will then need to be secured from the Legislature and released by the governor.

“This is an important investment in the future of Kohala High School to meet the athletic needs of our students,” said Rep. David Tarnas, D-North and South Kohala, North Kona. “The community is very grateful to the Governor for the release of these funds, and I will continue to advocate for this project as it moves forward through design and construction. The release of these funds is especially timely since Kohala High School boys’ basketball team just won the D-2 State Championship!”

Kohala High School Principal Amy Stafford also highlighted the importance of this project for the school and for the community.

“Kohala High School is thrilled to receive funds from the governor’s office so we can begin the planning stages for a long needed athletic facility to serve our students and community. A new gymnasium on campus will provide us with autonomy when scheduling practices and games without infringing on other important events that serve our community’s needs,” she said. “School athletics and community-wide events are integral pieces in the fibre of our community. The new facility will be the hub for our students to compete on their own campus with pride and be a site where our community will always feel they belong.”
