A man hospitalized at an Oahu hospital after returning from Washington state has tested positive for COVID-19, state officials announced Sunday.
The “elderly” man, who is in serious condition, is the second confirmed case in Hawaii, Gov. David Ige and Health Director Bruce Anderson said.
After returning to Honolulu from Washington on March 4, the man went to an urgent care facility on Wednesday. He was taken by ambulance to an undisclosed hospital on Saturday. There he was tested for novel coronavirus, which came back positive on Sunday.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been notified and an investigation is ongoing to determine who the man had been with before and after returning to Hawaii.
Hawaii’s first presumptive positive case was announced Friday. That individual, an Oahu resident, was a passenger on the Grand Princess cruise in Mexico from Feb. 11-21 and disembarked in Mexico. The vessel continued on to Hawaii, visiting four ports, including Hilo on Feb. 29.
As of Sunday evening, there were 75 individuals self-monitoring with public health supervision for COVID-19. Sixty-eight were on Oahu, two was on Hawaii Island, four was on Maui, and one was on Kauai.
