Officers arrest 23 for suspected DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for suspected drunken driving between March 2 and Sunday. Seven of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash.

Kona officers arrested nine motorists while Puna officers arrested seven and South Hilo officers five, according to data released Tuesday morning by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Kohala and North Kohala arrested one motorist in each district.

So far this year, there have been 221 DUI arrests compared with 223 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 191 major accidents so far this year compared with 186 during the same period last year.

Six fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Tuesday morning, police said. By this time in 2019, two people had perished.
