Fire officials are investigating the cause of an early Tuesday structure fire in Hawi.

Responding to the 5:36 a.m. alarm, Hawaii Fire Department arrived at the Hawi Hale Apartment complex to a single-story duplex engulfed in flames, the department said in a press release. Upon arrival of firefighters, all occupants of the structure had already evacuated.

Firefighters first to arrive on scene kept the fire from spreading to other structures, and once additional units and manpower arrived the fire was extinguished. The structure and three vehicles were damaged in the fire.

The occupants were being assisted by the American Red Cross, according to the press release.

The fire prompted the closure of Akoni Pule Highway between Waipele Street and Hawi Road for several hours.
