Police arrest 13 for suspected DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested 13 motorists for suspected drunken driving between March 16 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash.

Kona and South Hilo officers arrested four motorists in each district, according to data released Monday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Kohala and Puna arrested two motorists in each district. In Hamakua, one driver was arrested for DUI.

So far this year, there have been 259 DUI arrests compared with 272 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 221 major accidents so far this year compared with 227 during the same period last year.

Seven fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Sunday, police said. By this time in 2019, three people had perished.
