The Hawaii Island Humane Society closed its three shelters to the public and volunteers effective Wednesday.
Hawaii Island Humane Society shelter staff will continue to ensure that pets are fed and kennels are clean, the organization said in a press release, noting that there is no evidence that companion animals have been infected or could spread the coronavirus (COVID-19), according to the World Health Organization.
In addition, all dog parks are closed, including the Bark Park in Keauhou Mauka.
During the closure the society said it will provide essential services, including intakes, animal control, lost pets, owner-surrendered pets, owner-requested euthanasia and adoptions and fostering programs.
The humane society will also not be issuing spay and neuter coupons this month. Community spay and neuter programs including the Angel Day 2020 Spay & Neuter for Pit Bull Mixes at the Keaau Shelter slated for April 1 and 2 are canceled. All programs including micro-chipping, humane education classes, group visits, events, field trips for shelter dogs and new volunteer introductions are postponed until further notice.
Dog license renewals are by mail only. Renewal cards and payment should be made to Hawaii Island Humane Society, 78-6767 Mamalahoa Highway, Holualoa, HI 96725. Checks should be made payable to the Hawaii Island Humane Society.
The Hawaii Island Humane Society asked people not to come to the shelters, unless one of the essential services is needed. The individual shelters can be contacted for appointments by calling the Keaau shelter at (808) 966-5458, the Kona shelter at (808) 329-1175 and the Waimea shelter at (808) 885-4558.
