A total of 16 people have been arrested or cited on the Big Island for violating Gov. David Ige of a stay-at-home order issued last month.
Between March 25 and Tuesday, Hawaii Police Department officers arrested nine people and cited six persons for “prohibited acts” in violation of Ige’s order; criminal cases were initiated against three people, according to statistics released Wednesday afternoon by the Hawaii Police Department.
In West Hawaii, Kona saw three people arrested and four cited while South Kohala saw just one arrest, according to the department. In Ka‘u, one person was arrested and two criminal cases were initiated.
In South Hilo, two people were arrested and two people were cited, according to police. In Puna, two people were cited and two people were arrested.
Violation of the stay-at-home order is a misdemeanor offense that carries up to a year in jail and a fine of no more than $5,000.
The stay-at-home order went into effect at 12:01 a.m. March 25 and will remain in place until 11:59 p.m. April 30.
