Hawaii Island police arrested five motorists for suspected drunken driving between March 30 and Sunday. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash.

Kona officers arrested two drivers while officers in Ka‘u, Puna and South Hilo officers arrested one motorist in each district, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department.

So far this year, there have been 267 DUI arrests compared with 311 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 239 major accidents so far this year compared with 261 during the same period last year.

Seven fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Sunday, police said. By this time in 2019, three people had perished.
