Police arrest 11 for suspected DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested 11 motorists for suspected drunken driving between April 27 and Sunday. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash and two were younger than age 21.

Kona officers arrested four drivers while officers in Puna arrested three and South Hilo two, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Kohala and North Hilo arrested one driver in each district.

So far this year, there have been 301 DUI arrests compared with 386 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 280 major accidents so far this year compared with 329 during the same period last year.

Eight fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Tuesday afternoon, police said. By this time in 2019, six people had perished.
