Dorothy Hauanio-Fernandez

Dorothy Leimomi Hauanio-Fernandez, 56, of Hilo, died April 26, 2020, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Feb. 20, 1964, in Hilo, she was a processing manager for Hawaiian Fresh Products Inc.

She is survived by mother, Elizabeth Hauanio of Hilo; daughter, Shanelle (Jessica) Fernandez of Hilo; sons, Shane Fernandez and Spencer Kahapea, both of Hilo; sister, Helen Kamauoha of Hilo; brother, Joseph (Shawna) Hauanio of Valencia, California; hanai sister, Rae Hauanio of Pahoa; hanai brothers, Les (Denise) Hauanio of Pahoa, and Dana Hauanio of Hilo; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

William Kaipo Sr.

William “Billy” Kaipo Sr., 66, of Hilo, died April 21, 2020, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Sept. 22, 1953, in Hilo, he was retired from Yamada and Sons Inc. and was a member of the Hawaiian Golf Club.

Private services were held.

He is survived by wife, Mallory Kaipo of Hilo; sons, William (Kylene Medeiros) Kaipo Jr. and John (Alina-Rae Mendoza) Kaipo of Hilo; daughter, Kristen Kaipo of Honokaa; brother, Joseph (Antoinette) Kaipo Jr. of Glenwood; sisters, Betty (Vicente) Pelanca of Hilo, Geraldine Kawasaki of Keaau; four grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Shirley Spencer

Shirley Kahaunani Spencer, 51, of Hilo, died April 27, 2020, at Hilo Medical Center. She was born June 19, 1968, in Honokaa.

She is survived by daughter, Donielle (Kawika Ho) Gerard-Ho of Hilo; sons, Donald (Linda) Gerard, Dason Gerard and Dalen (Saesha) Spencer, all of Hilo; brother, Todd (Tikei) Spencer of Hilo; sister, Barbara (Tony Soto) Spencer Apolo of Kona; nine grandchildren.

Walter Hughes

Walter Franklin Hughes, 98, of Keaau, died April 26, 2020, at his residence. Born in Santa Barbara, California, he was a retired veterinarian and avian pathologist for Kimberchiks, docent for the Collings Foundation’s “Wings of Freedom” tour, a member of the Peter Tam Hoy Tai Chi group, and a U.S. Army Air Corps World War II veteran.

Services will be held at a later date.

He is survived by sons, Robert (Joann) Hughes of Boise, Idaho, Thomas (Vicki) Hughes of Pasco, Washington; daughter, Patricia (Eddie) Macomber of Keaau; brother, Leroy Hughes of San Diego; four grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Daniel Watanabe

Daniel Gichu Watanabe, 74 of Hilo died April 18, 2020, at his residence. Born in Kaunakakai, Molokai, he was a U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran.

He is survived by daughter, Reagan Kamahele of Papaikou; son, Bradley Watanabe of Mililani, Oahu; brother, Orlando Watanabe of Mililani, Oahu; sister, Margaret (Frank) Fuchino of Waimea; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Paul Pargett

Paul Joseph Pargett, 77, of Kailua-Kona, died April 4, 2020, at Kona Community Hospital. Born May 4, 1942 in Oakland, California, he was the owner of ARS Electric and a U.S. Navy veteran.

Services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be sent to West Hawaii Humane Society.

He is survived by wife, Sue-Sue Pargett of Kailua-Kona; daughter, Laura Pipitone; son, Nicholas Pargett; brothers, Michael Pargett, Steve Pargett all of California; sisters, Mimi Vail of Arkansas, Jane Grant of California; numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

Tony Atkinson

Tony Darrell Atkinson, 57, of Holualoa, died April 18, 2020 at Kona Community Hospital. Born Aug. 21, 1962, in Christchurch, New Zealand, he was a retired owner of an auto body repair shop.

He is survived by fiance, Monique Sullivan of Holualoa; sons, Tyler Atkinson and Walker Atkinson of Denver, Colorado; father, Ivan Atkinson; sister, Deborah Visser; and brother, Dean (Rachel) Atkinson, all of Christchurch, New Zealand.

Richard Kahoalii Sr.

Richard Kahoalii Sr., 96, of Kailua-Kona, died April 20, 2020, at his residence. Born Oct. 7, 1923, in Waiohinu, he was a retired longshoreman for Pacific Maritime Association in Sacramento, California, and member of Maui Aikido Club, Eureka Aikido Club, Puka Da Sky Golf Club, ILWU Local 14 of Eureka, California and ILWU Local 18 of Sacramento, California.

He is survived by wife, Edith Kahoalii of Kailua-Kona; children, Richard (Deanna) Kahoalii Jr. of California, LaVerne (Walter) Quinones of Kailua-Kona, Eric (Sharron) Kahoalii of California; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Julie Ann Campbell, 66, of Kailua-Kona, died April 23, 2020, at Kona Community Hospital. Born March 27, 1954 in Hartford, Connecticut, she was the owner of Closet Space Kona.

Gregory Trifonovitch

Gregory John Trifonovitch, 84, of Keaau, died April 4, 2020, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Jerusalem, Israel, he was a retired researcher and acting director of the East-West Center on Oahu, pilot, soccer coach, member of Puna Covenant Church, Big Island Wood Turners and a U.S. Army Korean War veteran.

He is survived by sons, John (Kathy) Trifonovitch of Kailua, Oahu, David (Kelli) Trifonovitch of Manoa; daughter, Sonya (Darren) Ah Chong of Keaau; sisters, Mary (Robert) Gibbs of Seattle, Varia Schwope of San Diego; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Mitra Aslani, 75, of North Kohala, died April 28, 2020, at her residence. Born Feb. 7, 1945 in Tehran, Iran, she was a retired employee of the Hilton Waikoloa Village.

Daniel Kahawai, 71, of Keaau, died March 19, 2020 in Hilo. Born Dec. 14, 1949 in Waianae, Oahu, he was a retired custodian at Kamaile Elementary School in Waianae.

He is survived by wife, Gwendolyn Kahawai of Waianae; son, Jonah (Mykalyn) Kahawai of Waianae; daughter, Rowena Lehua (Marc) Ota of Keaau; sisters, Janice Kahawai and Caroline Kahawai-Bargas, both of Waianae, and Olinda Kuamo’o- Salem of Oregon; eight grandchildren; numerous cousins.

Mary Evangelista

Mary Kuulei Evangelista, 89, of Pahala, died April 2, 2020 in Hilo. Born Feb. 10, 1931, in Pahala; she was a retired supervisor for the Hawaii County Economic Opportunity Council and member of the Pahala Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

She is survived by sons, Roderick (Marcia) Evangelista of Mountain View, Vernon (Maelyne) Evangelista of Waimea, Harry Evangelista of Pahala and John (Samuelyn) Evangelista of Hilo; daughter, Georgette (Sonny) Ramos of Naalehu; 36 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; hanai son, Patrick (Ruth) Andrade of Kona; hanai daughters, Winifred (Lawrence) De Soto of Honolulu, Abigail (Brandon) Seda of Papaikou and Tutie Brennan of Kohala; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Tevita Mapa Kauvaka, 64, of Keaau, died April 11, 2020, at home. He was born on May 2, 1955 in Tonga.

Lena “Aunty Hobby” Kamilipua Hooper, 76, of Kainaliu, died April 17, 2020, at Kona Community Hospital. Born April 5, 1944 in Honalo, she was a retired housekeeper for the Royal Kona Resort.
