A woman required rescue Sunday afternoon after suddenly falling ill while hiking in Hamakua.

Responding to the 4:19 p.m. alarm, Hawaii Fire Department rescue personnel arrived approximately 15 minutes later at the scene located about one-quarter mile up Kawalii Gulch Stream. There, they found a woman who had hiked about a half-mile from Highway 19 when she suddenly did not feel well and was unable to hike back out.

Using Chopper 1, the woman was hoisted from the dry river bed area and transported to a waiting medic, according to the department. The woman did not appear injured and was ambulatory before being taken by medics in stable condition to Hilo Medical Center.

The department noted the cause of the rescue as “party of individuals not following stay at home order.”
