Fire officials are investigating the cause of a Tuesday afternoon fire that damaged a home in Hilo.

Responding to the 12:24 p.m. report, firefighters arrived at 728 Hinano St. to find black smoke coming from the rear of the structure. A propane tank was possibly involved in the fire at the time.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, attempting to “protect as much personal property as possible.” Personnel also located two dogs hiding inside the residence. The pets were unharmed.

“Homeowners were very grateful that their pets had been saved,” a media release from the department reads.

Damage to the structure was estimated at $25,000.
