Hawaii Island police arrested 14 motorists for suspected drunken driving between May 4 and Monday. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash.

Puna officers arrested seven drivers while officers in Kona arrested four and South Hilo three, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department.

So far this year, there have been 316 DUI arrests compared with 409 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 290 major accidents so far this year compared with 341 during the same period last year.

Eight fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Tuesday afternoon, police said. By this time in 2019, six people had perished.
