A person died in a house fire in an upper Puna subdivision early Wednesday.

According to a Hawaii Fire Department statement, 10 units responded to the 12:33 a.m. alarm with the first unit arriving at the Ahuikau Street home in Eden Roc subdivision at 12:57 a.m.

Arriving firefighters found the house fully involved with the roof collapsed and fire spreading to nearby brush.

The fire was reported under control at 1:10 a.m. and extinguished at 3:30 a.m.

According to the statement, the body of the “deceased individual was discovered among the roofing material and the rubble.”

The victim wasn’t identified, nor was the gender of the individual.

Neighbors told firefighters they believed the house was occupied by squatters, according to the statement.

Damage were estimated at $249,600, with no property value saved.
