Hawaii Island police arrested a dozen motorists for suspected drunken driving between May 18 and Sunday. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash and one was younger than age 21.

Kona officers arrested seven drivers while officers in South Kohala arrested three, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Hilo and Puna arrested one motorist in each district.

So far this year, there have been 342 DUI arrests compared with 456 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 322 major accidents so far this year compared with 307 during the same period last year.

Eight fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Tuesday afternoon, police said. By this time in 2019, seven people had perished.
