Venue announces upcoming live entertainment
Gertrude’s Jazz Bar in Kailua-Kona has reopened and is offering live entertainment five nights a week.
To ensure social distancing and compliance with state and CDC guidelines, two shows will per offered per night with the first performance from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and the second from 9 to 10:30 p.m.; unless otherwise noted. A $5 cover is assessed per show.
Larry Dupio performs the blues this evening followed by county music by Neil Barnett on Saturday. On Sunday, the venue will host a kanakapila with Alena and Juni from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and 7:30 to 9 p.m.
On Wednesday, Lucky Tongue performs a “Birthday Bash” for those with June birthdays. The first show is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. with the second performance running from 8:30 to 10 p.m.
Thursday will feature live latin jazz with Fuego!

Theater announces cast of ‘The Laramie Project’
Retiring artistic director Jerry Tracy has cast “The Laramie Project,” the first production of Aloha Theatre’s 2020-21 production season.
Twelve actors have been selected and have been rehearsing via Zoom: Catherine Williams, Dan McCoy, David A. Payne, Jaquelynn Collier, John Sucke, Lindsay Roth, Nicole Gour, Riley Saito, Sara Hagen, Stefani Pelletier, Stephen Alves, and Victor Lugo. There are over 60 characters in the show, meaning each actor will play multiple roles.
“The Laramie Project” was written by Moises Kaufman and the members of New York’s Tectonic Theater Project. It is based on a series of interviews with the people of Laramie, Wyoming, in the wake of the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard. During the year and a half development of the play, the Tectonic Theater Project company members traveled to Laramie six times to try to capture the impact of the crime on the community and create a piece of “verbatim theater.”
The show is Tracy’s farewell production. His assistant director is Tiffany Kutsunai, and designers include Gerald Lucena, set; Karen Barry, costumes; Kate Jacobson, props; and Jeff Rowand, sound.
Aloha Theatre plans to present the show at the historic Kainaliu venue Aug. 14-30, with Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m.
As the island, state, and country are still in a period of uncertainty related to COVID-19, the schedule is subject to change.

Ohrlando’s Chamber Ensemble to livestream performance
Ohrlando’s Chamber Ensemble will livestream a performance benefiting The Food Basket at 5 p.m. Sunday via its YouTube channel.
The ensemble is asking those who view the performance featuring Roland Maurer on oboe and bassoon and Ursula Hesse on piano to donate to The Food Basket online at www.hawaiifoodbasket.org.
Waikoloa Beach Resort cancels Fourth of July fireworks event
WAIKOLOA BEACH RESORT, HAWAII ISLAND – The Waikoloa Beach Resort announces that its annual Fourth of July Extravaganza fireworks show will be canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are saddened to make this difficult decision because we love welcoming our community to the resort for this annual tradition every Fourth of July,” said Scott Head, Waikoloa’s vice president of resort operations. “Our community’s health and safety is our top priority.”
The Fourth of July Extravaganza is a much-beloved annual event that draws 4,500 guests — locals and visitors alike — each summer.
