HONOLULU — A 28-year-old man died after a struggle with officers in windward Oahu, Honolulu police said.
A patrol officer was sent to a report of an argument Wednesday in Kaneohe and found the man arguing with someone else and lying in a truck that didn’t belong to him.
“The male was combative and punching and kicking the truck’s interior before he slid out of the vehicle and began struggling with the officer and the bystander,” police said in a statement.
A second officer arrived and the man was handcuffed. The man continued to struggle and a third officer put leg shackles on him and called for an ambulance, police said.
“The male was seated on the ground and leaning against one of the vehicles when he became unresponsive,” police said. “Officers and the bystander provided first aid until paramedics arrived and provided advanced medical treatment.”
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The Honolulu medical examiner’s office didn’t immediately release information about the man Thursday.
The officers have been offered administrative leave while the department investigates, which is standard procedure for officer-involved deaths, police said.
