Police arrest 12 for suspected drunken driving

Hawaii Island police arrested a dozen motorists for suspected drunken driving between June 15 and Sunday. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash and one was younger than age 21.

Puna officers arrested six drivers while officers in South Hilo, Kona and South Kohala arrested two motorists in each district, according to data released Monday by the Hawaii Police Department.

So far this year, there have been 402 DUI arrests compared with 544 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 381 major accidents so far this year compared with 439 during the same period last year.

Ten fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Monday afternoon, police said. By this time in 2019, 11 people had perished.
