Emergency warning sirens to be tested Wednesday

The monthly test of the all-hazard Statewide Outdoor Warning Siren System, coordinated with the test of the Live Audio Broadcast segment of the Emergency Alert System, is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. Wednesday.

During this monthly test, all outdoor warning sirens will sound a 1-minute attention alert signal (steady tone). A simultaneous test of the live audio broadcast segment of the Emergency Alert System is conducted with the monthly siren sounding, in cooperation with Hawaii’s broadcast industry.

There will be no exercise or drill accompanying the test, according to the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency.

If you hear this siren tone in circumstances other than a test, follow emergency information and instructions provided by official government channels. This may be in the form of a local radio, television station broadcast, and/or cellular Wireless Emergency Alert.

To report siren operation issues in Hawaii County, call 935-0031.

Alzheimer Association hosts online workshop July 18

The Alzheimer Association’s Aloha Chapter is hosting guest speaker and acclaimed author Frances Kakugawa to lead a one-hour online workshop, “Caregiving: A Dignified Life Without Guilt or Remorse” next month.

The workshop, which will be held from 2-3 p.m. July 18, is designed for caregivers, writers of all levels, and anyone who would like to support the nonprofit’s work in Hawaii Island, Maui, Kauai and Oahu.

Kakugawa, born and raised in Kapoho, is an award-winning author of 15 books who conducts workshops and lectures throughout the U.S. on family caregiving, teaching, writing and poetry.

The workshop will raise funds for the Alzheimer Association’s Aloha Chapter and its programs in honor of “The Longest Day,” an annual event which brings people together to stand against the darkness of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
