Police arrest two dozen for suspected drunken driving

Hawaii Island police arrested two dozen motorists for suspected drunken driving between June 22 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash and one was younger than age 21.

South Hilo officers arrested nine drivers, Puna officers six and Kona officers five, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Kohala arrested three motorists in the district while Ka‘u officers arrested one driver.

So far this year, there have been 426 DUI arrests compared with 558 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 394 major accidents so far this year compared with 459 during the same period last year.

Ten fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Tuesday afternoon, police said. By this time in 2019, 12 people had perished.
