Police arrest 23 for suspected DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for suspected drunken driving between June 29 and Sunday. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash.

Kona officers arrested 10 of the drivers while South Hilo officers arrested seven drivers and Puna officers three, according to data released Monday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Kohala arrested two motorists in the district while North Kohala officers arrested one driver.

So far this year, there have been 449 DUI arrests compared with 577 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 403 major accidents so far this year compared with 479 during the same period last year.

Ten fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Monday afternoon, police said. By this time in 2019, 13 people had perished.
