Library hours expanded

The Hawaii State Public Library System has expanded public service hours at branches to include some evening and weekends hours. Computer Time at the Library and Library Take Out services will continue to be offered, but full access to libraries is not available yet due to the ongoing pandemic conditions.

Libraries will be open only for library patrons with computer reservations, which can be made online at www.librarieshawaii.org or by calling a library. A limited number of walk-ins may be accepted, based on available space, on a first-come, first-served basis.

All library patrons entering the building to use the computers are required to wear a mask. All equipment and high touch areas will be cleaned after each computer session is completed.

The library system also announced that use of Ancestry Library Edition from home is extended through July 31.

Credit union announces scholarship recipients

HFS Federal Credit Union recently awarded seven high school students and three current college students scholarships totalling $25,000.

Each of the 10 recipients was awarded a $2,500 scholarship via the credit union’s scholarship program, which has awarded more than $127,000 in scholarships over the past nine years to 50 credit union student members. This year was the first time college students were included.

“Over the years, families have told us that opportunities for scholarships decrease once students enroll in higher education. HFS is proud to help fulfill an important need in these students’ scholastic journey,” said Jesica Carriaga, the credit union’s marketing specialist.

The 2020 high school scholarship recipients were Nicholas Lucas and Kiani Aburamen (Waiakea High School); Jake Nishmoto and Kiana Aniu (Kamehameha Schools Hawaii); Lucy Yoes (Hawaii Academy of Arts and Sciences); Kaala Dietch (Ke Kula O Nawahiokalaniopuu) and Kylie Aurello (Honokaa High School). College scholarship recipients were Silas Pelkey (Oberlin College &Conservatory); Kiaria Nakamura (University of Hawaii at Hilo); and Kaley Oliveira (Hawaii Community College).

The scholarships are open to Big Island high school seniors as well as students attending any college who are current HFS Federal Credit Union members.
