Recent high school graduates Catherine Chow (Keaau High) and Jaymie Kunitomo (Konawaena) added to their stipend collections as recipients of the Hawaii Medical Service Association’s Kaimana Awards &Scholarship Program.
Chow, who ran cross-country and will attend Dartmouth, and Kunitomo, who participated in soccer, tennis and bowling and is set to enter Gonzaga, collect $5,000 apiece toward their college studies.
In its 15th year, the HMSA program honored 15 student-athletes statewide for achievement in academics, athletics and community service, with “special consideration given to students who participate in lower-profile sports.” A GPA of at least 2.75 was required.
In addition, the BIIF’s Kaimana School Award winners were Keaau High (200-plus students) and Parker School (199 or fewer) for success in academics, athletics, community service, healthy activities and sportsmanship. It’s the eighth consecutive year Parker has been honored, while Keaau has earned an accolade seven of the past eight years.
Previously, Kunitomo earned a $1,500 stipend as a Roy Fujimoto Athletic Scholarship winner, and Chow took home a $1,500 Wayne “Big Dog” Joseph Scholarship.
