Dozen arrested for drunken driving last week

Hawaii Island police arrested 12 motorists for suspected drunken driving between July 6 and Sunday. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash and four were younger than age 21.

Kona officers arrested five of the drivers while South Hilo and South Kohala officers arrested three drivers in each district, according to data released Monday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in Puna arrested one driver.

So far this year, there have been 461 DUI arrests compared with 597 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 420 major accidents so far this year compared with 501 during the same period last year.

Ten fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Monday afternoon, police said. By this time in 2019, 13 people had perished.
