Big Island police arrest 28 for suspected DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested 28 motorists for suspected drunken driving between July 13 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash and two were younger than age 21.

Kona officers arrested 13 of the drivers while South Hilo officers arrested seven and Puna officers five, according to data released Monday by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Kohala arrested three motorists.

So far this year, there have been 489 DUI arrests compared with 621 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 426 major accidents so far this year compared with 526 during the same period last year.

Eleven fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Monday afternoon, police said. By this time in 2019, 13 people had perished.
