2020 Living Treasures program postponed
The Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii has made the difficult decision to forgo accepting nominations for the 2021 Living Treasures of Hawaii and cancel the in-person recognition luncheon program this year due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Residential hazardous waste collection event coming up
The County of Hawaii’s Department of Environmental Management will hold a free residential household hazardous waste collection event on Aug. 8 in the parking lot of Kealakehe High School in Kailua-Kona.
Between 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. that day, the county will collect acceptable household hazardous waste including automotive fluids, used batteries, fluorescent bulbs, and pesticides. No latex paint, electronic waste, or tires will be accepted. For a complete list of acceptable and unacceptable items, visit www.hawaiizerowaste.org.
The event is for household-generated and self-hauled waste only. Business, government agency, nonprofit agency, or farm wastes are prohibited by law. Social distancing rules will be in place and face coverings will be required.
The next scheduled West Hawaii collection event is in March 2021 in Waimea.

Provisional law license offered as alternative to sitting for bar exam
The Hawaii Supreme Court announced Wednesday that it has established an option for applicants for the Sept. 9 and 10 written bar exam to receive a temporary, provisional license to practice law as an alternative to sitting for the written exam.
The court, recognizing the logistical challenges and health concerns surrounding the upcoming exam during the COVID-19 pandemic, will give applicants who, by order of the court, are approved to sit for the exam, the option of foregoing the exam in favor of the provisional license. The exam will still be administered as scheduled, for those who wish to take it, with appropriate public health protections in place.
The provisional license will require the licensee to work under the direct supervision of an attorney who is currently actively licensed in and practicing in Hawaii. The supervising attorney will also be required to be named on all pleadings and other court submissions. Other requirements for obtaining the provisional license are set forth in the court’s order.
The provisional license will expire July 1, 2022, unless the applicant successfully passes the Hawaii bar exam before then, and will require the provisionally licensed attorney to remain in good standing in all jurisdictions where the individual is licensed, and to honor all obligations imposed on regularly licensed Hawaii attorneys.
All applicants for the September exam are also being offered the opportunity to defer taking the exam to a later date, without penalty or loss of fees already paid, regardless of whether they pursue obtaining a provisional license.

VFW announces meals, meeting
The VFW Kona Post, located behind Kona Locksmith on Kaiwi Street, will host its Friday meal from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. The dinner will feature an all you-can-eat evening meal with a “rechauffe presentation of various entrees from our freezers” for $10.
The Marine Corps League will conduct its regular monthly meeting at 11 a.m. Saturday.
For Taco Tuesday there will be ground beef taco, rice and beans from 3 to 6 p.m. for $7.
