State reports 124 new COVID-19 cases
State health officials Thursday reported 124 new cases of COVID-19, another single-day record, as the state’s total case count neared 2,000.
Of the new cases, 100 were on Oahu and four were on Maui, according to the COVID-19 Joint Information Center. Thirty-two of the cases were among pediatric patients younger than age 18.
The new cases announced Thursday brings the state’s total case count to 1,989 with Oahu accounting for the majority of the cases at 1,637. Maui County has recorded 167 cases, Hawaii County 115 and Kauai County 47. Twenty-three residents have tested positive while out of the state.
Hawaii County’s case count was lowered Thursday due one case being re-categorized to Oahu, health officials said.
Of the Hawaii residents who have tested positive for COVID-19, 1,226 of those cases have since recovered and been released from isolation. That includes 114 of the 115 cases on Hawaii Island.
Statewide, 177 patients have required hospitalization, including four on Hawaii Island.
Lt. Gov. Josh Green said Wednesday that 46% or 112 out of the state’s 244 intensive care unit beds were in use with 15 of those beds being occupied by COVID-19 patients. Fourteen percent, or 64 of the state’s 459 ventilators, are in use with nine being utilized by COVID-19 patients.
To date, there has been a roughly 11% hospitalization rate for people who catch COVID-19, Green said, also noting that hospitalizations usually lag behind daily case counts because it takes time for the disease to progress in patients.
Of the 26 deaths reported among Hawaii residents since Feb. 28, 19 were on Oahu, six were on Maui and one was a Kauai resident receiving treatment in Arizona at the time he died.
