Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Aug. 3 and Sunday. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash.

Kona officers arrested nine of the drivers while South Hilo officers arrested seven, Puna officers five and South Kohala officers five, according to data released Monday by the Hawaii Police Department. One motorist was arrested in North Kohala.

So far this year, there have been 545 DUI arrests compared with 679 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 469 major accidents so far this year compared with 583 during the same period last year.

Twelve fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways through Monday afternoon, police said. By this time in 2019, 13 people had perished.
