In anticipation of large crowd gatherings for the Statehood Day holiday weekend, combined with the lack of resources to enforce COVID-19 safe physical distancing practices, the County of Hawaii Department of Public Works announced Thurdsay it is closing Waipio Valley to the public from 7 a.m. Friday until 7 a.m. Monday.

Special duty officers and Waipio Valley Rangers will be on site at the top of the road leading into the valley to ensure valley access is restricted to local traffic only (residents, landowners and farmers).

Local traffic will be allowed to pass through, one vehicle at a time.
