Virtual talk story Saturday with author David Wolman
Award-winning author and journalist David Wolman is the featured guest in the Hawaii State Public Library System’s virtual talk story series at 10 a.m. Saturday. This program, which is appropriate for ages 12 and older, is free and open to the public.

Wolman, who recently co-authored “Aloha Rodeo: Three Hawaiian Cowboys, the World’s Greatest Rodeo, and a Hidden History of the American West,” will share insights and answer questions about the extraordinary lost story of the Hawaiian cowboys who became rodeo champions, challenging the mythology of the American West.
Aloha Rodeo won the 2020 Oregon Book Award and was named one of NPR’s 100 best books of the year. National Geographic Traveler named the book one of “12 travel books you won’t be able to put down,” and Honolulu Magazine called Aloha Rodeo “a perfect summer read” that “moves at a fast clip,” but also “italicizes the historical cruelties” of the Wild West and American imperialism.
Wolman, a sought-after speaker, has been featured in media such as NPR, RadioLab, BBC, Frontline, CBS Sunday Morning, and the Washington Post. He is the author of three previous works of nonfiction, and currently is a contributing editor at Outside. Wolman’s writing also has appeared in Wired, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New Yorker, Nature, and many other publications. He is a former Oregon Arts Commission fellow, Fulbright journalism fellow (Japan), and a graduate of Stanford University’s journalism program. Together with his wife and two children, he recently relocated from Portland, Oregon to Waimea.
FOLK book clubs continue
Friends of the Libraries Kona’s book clubs continue via Zoom amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Book Squad, which is geared for children ages 7 to 12, gathers from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday via Zoom to discuss “The Great Brain.” For an invitation, contact hklcirc@librarieshawaii.org.

Kona Stories hosts book clubs via Zoom
Kona Stories hosts its Nonfiction Book Club on Tuesday via Zoom.
This week’s book is “Madame Fourcade’s Secret War: The Daring Young Woman Who Led France’s Largest Spy Network Against Hitler” by Lynne Olson. Book clubs meet at 6 p.m. to discuss the book and attendees should read it prior to attending the group and be prepared to discuss it. This group is open to all.
The book can be purchased online for home delivery or at the Keauhou Shopping Center store, which is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
