Canoe club announces scholarship recipients

Lawrence “Uncle Bo” Campos Scholarships were awarded this year to three young women with exceptional academics, active volunteerism, leadership and have actively paddled in high school and/or outrigger canoe club racing, Kai Opua Canoe Club announced this week.

A scholarship of $1,000 was awarded to Liana Prudholm. Also receiving scholarships of $500 each were Desiree Camacho and Lia-Tui Sarong.

Prudholm graduated from Keaau High School where she also paddled, as well as being a racing member of Keaukaha Canoe Club. She is continuing her college education at Hawaii Community College, majoring in electrical installation and maintenance technology.

Camacho and Sarong are both graduates of Kealakehe High School, paddled with the high school team and are racing members of Kai Opua Canoe Club.

Camacho will study at California Polytechnic State University at Pomona where she will pursue a degree in aerospace engineering. Sarong will continue her education at University of Washington where she will pursue a master’s degree in architecture. Both Camacho and Sarong are taking their courses online for the fall semester.

The scholarship is awarded annually to graduating seniors of Hawaii Island high schools, who participated in outrigger canoe paddling and are furthering their education at a university, college or trade school. Applications for the 2021 scholarship will be available in April at www.kaiopua.org/scholarship.
