Dolores Mattos

Dolores Laverne Mattos, 79, of Hilo died Sept. 8, 2020, at her residence. Born in Hilo, she was a retired custodian at Hilo Intermediate School and a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Friends may call at 1 p.m. Sept. 19 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 2 p.m. service. Burial to follow at the Alae Cemetery. Causal attire.

She is survived by husband, Sebastian Mattos of Hilo; sons, Howard Mattos Sr. and Ronald Mattos of Hilo, and David (Dawn) Mattos of Waikapu, Maui; daughters, Lorrie Mattos and Cheryl Mattos of Hilo; brothers, Everett (Aileen) Franco of Kukaiau, Phillip (Tanya) Velez of Paauilo and Harold Hocson of Hilo; sisters, Lorraine Decker of Mountain View, Eileen (Albert) Mattos of Hilo, Peggy Velez of Arizona and Leorna Honda of California; stepmother, Beatrice Hocson of Hilo; 14 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Alvin Cabral

Alvin “Al” Paul Cabral, 73, of Hilo, died on Sept. 8, 2020 at his residence. Born June 15, 1947, in Olaa, he was retired from the Hawaii National Guard, Day-Lum Rentals &Management and Hawaii Electric Light Co. as an electrical inspector.

Al was a Director of the Panaewa Stampede Rodeo, President of Hawaii Horse Owners, and a member of Kau Roping &Riding Club and St. Joseph School Class of 1965 Breakfast Club. He was honored as the Grand Marshal and Pau Marshal of the Merrie Monarch Parade.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Feb. 14, 2021, at the Panaewa Stampede Rodeo for services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hawaii Horse Owners Inc. and Friends of Panaewa Zoo.

He is survived by wife, Nancy Cabral of Hilo; sons, Todd (Randi) Cabral of Kapolei, Oahu, Jeff (Lacey) Cabral of Hilo, J.C. (Whitney) Cabral of Grass Valley, Oregon, and Cody Cabral of San Tan Valley, Arizona; sister, Joyce (Dennis) Wong of Mountain View; five grandchildren; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Liselotte Castaneda

Liselotte Kamahele Castaneda, 56, of Honokaa, died Sept. 1, 2020 at Kona Community Hospital. Born May 12, 1965, in Germany, she was a security officer.

No services will be held.

She is survived by husband, Larry Castaneda of Honokaa; parents, Bernard Labasan and Patsy Sabarre of Kealakeua; brothers, Michael (Maddie) DeJesus of Kona, John (Kalele Napoleon) of Oahu, and Mark DeJesus of Volcano; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Wayne De Motta

Wayne Gilbert De Motta, 65, of Hilo, died Sept. 7, 2020 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired Hawaii County paramedic who formerly worked at Hilo Coast Processing Co., member of the Keaukaha Canoe Club, Hawaii Firefighters Association, Black Belt from Honomu Judo Club, a fisherman and a hunter.

Services will be held at a later date.

He is survived by daughters, Kimberly De Motta and Kaycie (Ryland) Uchima of Pepeekeo, and Keala (Jason) Abadilla of Hilo; parents, Gilbert and Hannah De Motta of Hilo; brothers, Howard (Lyn) De Motta of Mililani, Oahu, and Wesly (Selena) De Motta of Pepeekeo; sister, Gayle (Kenneth) Higa of Hilo; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins.

Russell Mahi

Russell Keoki Mahi, 67, of Waimea, died Sept. 8, 2020 at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born in Honolulu, he was a self-employed mason.

He is survived by daughter, Mapuana Beddow; son, Shon Mahi; brothers, Randy Mahi, and Royden Mahi; sisters, Dee Dee Mahi and Deborah Mahi; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Masaye Kuwahara

Masaye Kuwahara, 99, of Hilo, died Aug. 18, 2020 at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Papaikou, she was retired from the former S.H. Kress store in Hilo.

She is survived by daughters, Lynn (Thomas) McCarthy and Claire (Craig) Shigeoka; step-daughter, Aline Younge; sister, Mildred Takahashi; brother, George Ashida; two grandchildren; one step-grandchild; two great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Kiyoko Horimoto

Kiyoko Horimoto, 100, of Papaikou, died Sept. 6, 2020 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, she was a homemaker and member of Papaikou Hongwanji Mission, Papaikou Hongwanji Buddhist Women’s Association and the former Tenrikyo Mishima Hilo Church.

Private services were held. Family requests no monetary gifts or flowers.

She is survived by daughters, Carolyn Imai and Susan Horimoto of Papaikou; son, Harold (Clara) Horimoto of San Jose, Calif.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three nieces.

Benjamin Cristobal Beltran Jr.

Benjamin Cristobal Beltran Jr., 80, of Keaau died Aug. 30, 2020, at his residence. Born in Dasmarinas, Cavite, Philippines, he was a retired project manager for Kajima USA, Inc. in Las Vegas and a field engineer and supervisor in Guam.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Sept. 25 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo for a 9:30 a.m. memorial Mass. Casual attire.

He is survived by wife, Evangeline Beltran of Keaau; hanai children, Armiejane Stevens of Texas, Michelle Arguson of California, and Nestor Arguson Jr. of California; brothers, Lodrigo Beltran and Jose Beltran of the Philippines; sisters, Dominga Landrito, Batilde Beltran and Helen Valencia, all of the Philippines, and Tessie McDermott of Jacksonville, Florida; numerous nieces and nephews.

Roy Iwasaki

Roy Katsuto Iwasaki, 76, of Hilo, died Sept. 8, 2020, in Hilo. Born in Hilo, he was a retired draftsman for the Hawaii County Department of Public Works, member of the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin, associate member of the Hilo Hooganji Mission and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Private services held. Family requests no flowers and no koden (monetary gifts).

He is survived by sister, June (Richard) Hidano of Pearl City, Oahu; a niece; a nephew; and numerous cousins.

Michael John Jr.

Michael “Mike” Makaokalani John Jr., 85, of Hilo, died Sept. 2, 2020 at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born April 11, 1935 in Hilo, he was a former employee for Holmes &Narver, a former manager for the Kona Hukilau and Hilo Hukilau, U.S. Marine Corps veteran and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Keaukaha Ward.

Private services held.

He is survived by brother, Samuel (Margaret) John of Gig Harbor, Washington; sister, Lorraine (Virgil) Medeiros of Hilo; uncle, Abner (Jan) Kama of Las Vegas; aunt, Bessie Watson of Oahu; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Larry Sasaki

Larry Masayuki Sasaki, 95, of Captain Cook, died Aug. 7, 2020 at his residence. Born June 25, 1925, he was a retired maintenance worker at Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, a member of Daifukuji Soto Mission and a U.S. Army World War II veteran.

Private services held.

He is survived by sons, Calvin Sasaki and Glenn (Mary Mariano) Sasaki of Captain Cook; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and one cousin.

Andrew Bright III

Andrew Iaukea Bright III, of Waikoloa, died Sept. 12, 2020, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born June 30, 1952, he was a musician, entertainer and radio announcer and member of the Kamehameha School Alumni Class of 1970.

Miyoko Kodani

Miyoko “Mike” Kodani, 95, of Hilo, died Aug. 27, 2020 in a private care home in Hilo. Born Dec. 8, 1924, in Waipahu, Oahu, she was retired from the Laupahoehoe Transportation Co.

Private services held. No flowers or koden (monetary offerings).

She is survived by husband, Teruo Kodani of Hilo; son, Michael (Mary Ann) Kodani of Hilo; daughters, Leila (Keith) Shimizu of Kailua-Kona and Joan (Roy) Takemoto of Hilo; sisters, Kimiko Higo of Honolulu, Tsuyako Kikuchi of Los Angeles; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Diane Neufeld-Heck

Diane Neufeld-Heck, 71, of Ocean View, died Sept. 8, 2020 at her residence. Born Nov. 25, 1948, in Bakersfield, CA, she was an ICU and emergency room nurse at the Kona Community Hospital.

She is survived by husband, Loren Heck of Ocean View; sister, Judith Hulse of Del Mar, CA; two nieces; and a nephew.
