Ohana Food Drops this week in Kona, Honokaa

The Food Basket will hold its Ohana Food Drops emergency food distribution in Kailua-Kona and Honokaa this week.

The Ohana Food Drops — a drive-through operation in which participants remain in their cars and provide information to food bank staff and volunteers through signage and hand motions — replaces The Food Basket’s normal “high touch” distributions as an effort to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Food will be placed in trunks by staff or volunteers to minimize contact.

Supplies will be available on a first come, first serve basis starting at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium and Saturday at Honokaa Sports Complex and Skate Park.

The Food Basket is not accepting food donations at this time, but monetary donations can be made online at www.hawaiifoodbasket.org.

Produce, ‘Cook Your Own Meal’ bundle pickups announced

Laiopua 2020 will distribute produce bags today and its “Cook Your Own Meal” bundles on Thursday in Kailua-Kona.

Produce bags supplement families’ meals and provide needed fresh fruits and vegetables.

Each “Cook Your Own Meal” bundle includes a recipe and the protein/produce/groceries to prepare the meal. The ingredients are enough to feed a family of six to eight. This week’s meal is Chicken Long Rice with Lomilomi Salmon. Only the first 150 vehicles will be served.

Distribution will take place at 5 p.m. both days at Laiopua 2020’s center, 74-5210 Keanalehu Drive in Kailua-Kona. Recipients are asked to drive through the parking lot to receive the bundle or bag. One bundle or bag per vehicle.

In addition, free hot meals will be served this evening, Wednesday and Friday at 5 p.m.
