Police arrest 28 for suspected drunken driving

Hawaii Island police arrested 28 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Sept. 14 and Sunday. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and three were younger than age 21.

Kona officers arrested 10 motorists while South Hilo officers arrested nine and Puna officers arrested eight, according to data released Monday afternoon by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Kohala arrested one motorist.

So far this year, there have been 683 DUI arrests compared with 813 during the same period last year, according to police. There have been 548 major accidents so far this year compared with 701 during the same period last year.

Thirteen fatalities have been recorded on Hawaii Island’s public roadways, police said. By this time in 2019, 14 people had perished.
