Hilo man charged with firearm and drug-related offenses

A Hilo man is facing a host of drug and firearms charges following a traffic stop on Sunday in Hilo.

Omar Kesment New was pulled over on Kilaha Street at which point South Hilo Patrol officers arrested him on an outstanding arrest warrant, according to the Hawaii Police Department. During the arrest, police reportedly observed New was wearing an empty firearm holster. Officers also reportedly observed drug paraphernalia within the vehicle that New was operating.

A search warrant was subsequently secured and served on the vehicle. Police said officers recovered a loaded 40 caliber semiautomatic pistol with no serial numbers. The firearm had an illegal high capacity magazine inserted in it and an additional had a high capacity magazine was also recovered along with ammunition. Detectives also recovered 1.4 grams of methamphetamine, 2.4 grams of marijuana, and a methamphetamine smoking pipe.

New was charged with four counts of ownership/possession (firearm) prohibited, two counts possessing a prohibited weapon, having a firearm on a highway, failure to have a place to keep ammunition, third-degree promoting a dangerous drug, third-degree promoting a detrimental drug, and manufacturing, purchasing, or obtaining a firearm parts to assemble a firearm having no serial number.

Bail was set at $167,000.
