Chiyono Shimokawa

Chiyono “Jo” Shimokawa, 94, of Hilo, died Sept. 2, 2020, at her residence. Born in Hilo, she worked at the former Sure Save Supermarker, was the owner of the former Houselots Store and a member of Hilo Daijingu.

Private services held. No flowers or koden (monetary donations).

She is survived by son, Cyril (Sandy Nuha) Shimokawa of Hilo; daughter, Lila Shimokawa of Hilo; sisters, Miyuki Masuda of Honolulu and Sachiko (Sadami) Yamamoto of Hilo; one grandson; nieces and nephews.

Kyong Ae Chong

Kyong Ae Chong, 70, of Hilo died Sept. 29, 2020, at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Hospice Facility. Born in South Korea, she was a retired cook. Survivors are asked to contact Dodo Mortuary at (808) 935-5751.

Sean Skillman

Sean Skillman, 64, of Hilo, died Aug. 21, 2020. Survivors are asked to contact Ballard Family Mortuary at 935-8445.

Kenneth French

Kenneth Scott French, 53, of Hilo, died Sept. 12, 2020, at his residence. Born May 11, 1967, in California, he was a residential construction supervisor in Central Texas and owner/builder of Ken French Hawaiian Homes in Hilo.

No services. Scattering of ashes to be held at a later date.

He is survived by father, Thomas French of Hilo; brother, Douglas (Steve) French of Santa Ana, CA; and sons, Kenneth French Jr., Harlan (Bella) French and Ryan French of Texas.

Roberta Vea

Roberta Ahleen Vea, 73, of Hilo, died Sept. 29, 2020, at Pohai Malama Hawaii Care Choices Hospice Facility. Born in Honolulu, she was a former manager of Family Entertainment-Carnival Carnival in Pearl City.

She is survived by husband, Alfred Vea Sr.; sons, Robert Vea, Dominic Vea, and Daniel Vea; daughter, Audrey Wright; brothers, Alfred Lee, Robert Lee, and Theodore Lee; 19 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Molly Isotani

Molly Jane Isotani, 85, of Hilo, died Sept. 16, 2020 at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born Aug. 31, 1935, in Pepeekeo, she was a retired housekeeper for Mauna Kea Beach Hotel.

Private services held. No flowers or koden (monetary donations).

She is survived by son, Paul (Debra) Isotani of Hilo; grandson, PJ Isotani of Hilo; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Edward Evans

Edward Robert Evans, 91, of Waikoloa, died Sept. 29, 2020, at his residence. Born Dec. 1, 1928, in Charleston, West Virginia, he was a U.S. Army veteran and an auditor for the State of New Mexico.

No services will be held at this time.

He is survived by spouse, Sally; son, Robert Evans of Peoria, AZ; daughter, Elizabeth (Adriaan) Hendriks of Waimea; and one grandchild.

Beatrice Kalai

Beatrice Palenapa Kalai, 97, of Hilo, died Sept. 25, 2020, at her residence. Born Jan. 2, 1923, in Honolulu, she was a retired social worker from Waimano Home in Pearl City and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo and St. George Catholic Church in Waimanalo.

Friends may call at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 8 at St. Joseph Catholic Church for Mass. Additional services to follow on Oahu. Casual attire and no flowers.

She is survived by daughters, Relda Palenapa and Davenie Kupau; sons, Renny Kalai, Webster Kalai and Milton (Aloha) Kalai; 30 grandchildren; 79 great-grandchildren; 73 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Yukiko Koochi

Yukiko Koochi, 95, of Honokaa, died Sept. 21, 2020 at a private care home in Hilo. Born in Holualoa, she was retired from the former Hamakua Sugar Co. and a member of Honokaa Hongwanji Mission and Honokaa Senior Center.

Private services were held.

She is survived by son, Alan (Danette) Koochi of Hilo; daughter, Nancy (Colin) Wilson of Kapaa, Kauai; four grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

David Nurse

David Reddick Nurse, 71, of Ahualoa, died Sept. 12, 2020, at his residence. Born in Hawi, he was employed by E.E. Black, Grace Pacific, Ameron, Jas. W. Glover, and was a retired senior safety professional with Hawaiian Dredging, and member of the General Contractors Association Safety Committee Member, among other affiliations.

He is survived by wife, Paula Nurse of Ahualoa; brother, James (Penny) Nurse of Sequim, Wash.; sister, Mary (Stacy) Rogers of Honolulu; several nieces and nephews.

Correction

An obituary published in Tuesday’s edition omitted a survivor for Fredie Domingo due to information supplied by the mortuary. Domingo, 42, of Kapaau, is also survived by brother, Meddie (Sheila) Domingo of Kapaau.
