Cecilia Araujo

Cecilia Dolores Araujo, 91, of Papaaloa, died Sept. 11, 2020, at her residence. Born Sept. 2, 1929, in Hilo, she was an anthurium grower for Puna Florist, a sugar cane grower, and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo.

Private services were held.

She is survived by daughters, Diana Ponsonby of Nevada and Bernadine Nentwig of Florida; sons, Albert (Shirley) Araujo of Michigan, Gordon Araujo and Robert Araujo, both of Hilo, and Douglas (Faith) Araujo of Minnesota; brothers, Michael Souza and Lawrence Souza, both of Hilo; sister, Marie (James) Souza of Nevada; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Melvin Tomita

Melvin “Mike” “da Bull” Mitsuo Tomita, 87, of Paauilo and formerly of Kahului, Maui, died Sept. 4, 2020, at Hilo Medical Center after residing at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo. Born in Maui, he was a Vietnam War veteran who received the Bronze Star Medal, worked selling and repairing typewriters on Maui and Honolulu, a fire engineer and equipment operator for the Honolulu Fire Department and a golf marshal for Honolulu Country Club.

Services held. The family plans to hold a full service with military honors at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.

He is survived by brother, Paul (Joy) Tomita of Monterey Park, CA; son, Mikey Tomita of Kahului, Maui; daughters, Gail (Derrick) Nakahara of Centralia, WA, Lauren Tomita of Washington, and Roxsanne (Randy) Ruff-Tomita of Paauilo; hanai daughter, Trudy Morita of Griffin, GA; two nephews; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
