George Will columns appreciated
I want to commend West Hawaii Today for regularly publishing columns by the conservative writer George Will. I am a somewhat left-leaning independent who appreciates honesty and insight more than ideology. George Will’s prose is so artfully crafted, his facts so meticulously researched and his logic so soundly constructed that I drool over every column as if it were one of my wife’s chocolate-maple syrup bread puddings. Although I don’t always agree with his conclusions, I always find him reasonable, witty and thought provoking. Reasoned dialog is fundamental to the democratic process. Republicans and Democrats alike would benefit from acting more like Mr. Will.

Increase in cases no surprise
I am not surprised that the number of COVID-19 cases is going up on the island of Hawaii. I am seeing many big parties with nobody wearing masks or distancing. It will continue going up with more people dying and getting sick. It is alarming to read about the many serious long-term effects that are not apparent at these early stages. This is going to be with us for a long time. We can only hope for treatments and that might not even help with those long-term issues where the damage may have already been done.
