Jean Matsuda

Jean Emiko Matsuda, 86, of Kapaau, died Sept. 30, 2020, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born in North Kohala, she was a retired shipping supervisor for Kohala Nursery and a member of Hawi Jodo Mission and Kohala Okinawa Kenjin Kai.

Services will be held at a later date.

She is survived by sons, Scot (Lyn) Matsuda, of Honolulu, Nat (Jasmine) Matsuda, of Phoenix, Ted (Kathleen) Matsuda and Kell (Jocelin) Matsuda, all of Kohala; daughter, Jan (Carl) Beavers, of Pahoa; brother, Kensuke (Minako) Arakaki, of Torrance, CA; 14 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Clarence Lui

Clarence Y.S. Lui, 89, of Mililani, Oahu, died Sept. 25, 2020, in Honolulu. Born in Honuapo, Ka‘u, he was a retired U.S. Air Force veteran.

Private services held. The family requests no koden (monetary donations) or flowers.

He is survived by sister, Florence Manuel, of Naalehu; sister in-law, Violet Lui, of Pearl City, Oahu; numerous nieces and nephews; and caregiver, Naomi Del Gaudio.

Charles Okino

Charles Tsuneo Okino, 87, of Captain Cook, died Oct. 8, 2020, at his residence. Born Sept. 6, 1933, in Hilo, he was a principal at Hookena, Kahakai, Holualoa and Honaunau elementary schools and a teacher at Hilo, Pahoa, Kamehameha high schools; and a U.S. Army veteran.

Private services will be held at a later date.

He is survived by wife, Yasue Okino, of Captain Cook; sons, Cody (Melissa) Okino and Ky (Bridgette) Okino, all of Kailua-Kona; daughter, Shay Dee (Ron Daog) Okino, of Las Vegas; brothers, Peter (Judy) Okino and Gary Okino, all of Hilo; sister, Gail (Bob Pfister), of Santa Barbara, CA; six grandchildren; two-great grandchildren; and several cousins.

Elsie Tsuji

Elsie Sayoko Tsuji, 85, of Hilo, died Oct. 12, 2020, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Hilo, she was a retired sales clerk for Shiigi Drugs.

Private services. Family requests no flowers or koden (monetary gifts).

She is survived by son, Reid (Jenifer) Tsuji of Mountain View; daughter, Jaci Tsuji of Hilo; brother, Jerry (Stella) Itamura of Torrance, CA; sister, Lorraine (Roy) Tomita of Hilo; three grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Michael Hoffmann

Michael Allen Hoffmann, 71, of Ocean View, died Oct. 3, 2020, at Nakamaru Hale. Born Oct. 21, 1948, in San Francisco, he was a glazer and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

He is survived by wife Deborah Hoffmann of Ocean View; daughter, Morgan Ryan Hoffmann of New Hampshire; and brother, Larry (Lucy) Hoffmann of Waterford, CA.

Juergen Denecke

Juergen Detlev Denecke, 78, of Keaau, died Oct. 4, 2020, at his residence. Born March 1, 1942, in Germany, he was the retired manager of Na Leo o Hawaii TV station in Hilo.
