Hawaii Island COVID-19 cases count reaches 1,026

Hawaii health officials reported 89 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, bringing the total number of cases statewide to 13,853 since the end of February.

Sixty-eight of the new cases were on Oahu while the remaining 21 were on Hawaii Island, according to the Hawaii COVID-19 Joint Information Center. Hawaii Island has now recorded 1,026 cases since Feb. 28.

Free drive-through COVID-19 testing will be offered today in Ka‘u. Testing will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at Kahuku Park in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense.

Statewide, 988 COVID-19 patients have required hospitalization. Eleven people were hospitalized Friday on Hawaii Island, according to the center’s noon update. Kona Community Hospital reported that it has three COVID-19 positive patients at the facility’s intensive care unit with two requiring ventilators.

The state reported one new coronavirus-related death on Friday among an Oahu resident.

Of the 185 coronavirus-related deaths confirmed and reported to date among Hawaii residents to date, 147 were on Oahu, 18 were on Maui, 18 were on Hawaii Island, and one was a Kauai resident receiving treatment in Arizona at the time he died.

Hawaii County Civil Defense reported no new coronavirus-related deaths Friday, leaving the death toll at 37. That figure includes 27 residents of the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo. The state has yet to confirm and report the last 19 deaths on the island.
